Facebook is the largest social media platform on the planet. It has been around for longer than just about any of its competitors, and throughout its strange and dramatic history, it has always been the top dog in terms of raw user numbers. Being the biggest and most pervasive platform on the planet has a ton of upsides. For one, it is one of the easiest ways to stay connected with friends no matter how far away they are. And the sheer size of its user base makes it a fantastic place to start building communities. That size is not entirely a good thing, however. As the number of overall users goes up, so too does the likely amount of problematic people you are going to have to deal with.
Divisive and trolling people are not a problem unique to Facebook by any means, though the size of the user base means it is ultimately easier to run into them by mistake. No form of social media is without its troublemakers. The layer of anonymity that the internet provides on top of the ease of scrolling through your smartphone to find someone to be hateful towards makes certain people so much more willing to be a nuisance for everyone else.
It can be distressing to deal with these types of people when all you want to do is share content that you enjoy, build a community, and interact with your friends. If you ignore them, sometimes they will go away since they mostly just crave attention. Some are persistent though and require targeted blocking. Though, if you are a larger scale influencer or community, or maybe if you just want to cut the hate off before it has a chance to develop, then the best thing for you would be to just remove the comments from your Facebook posts.
Notes on Removing Comments
Simply put, yes, it is possible to remove comments from Facebook, but it is a little convoluted. Facebook has a bit of a reputation for having a large suite of capabilities, but making them incredibly annoying to navigate, on top of being difficult to customize. If you need help figuring out how to customize your Facebook Page preview, check out our guide.
There is a bit of concern that removing the comments will mean that the positive people that interact with you or your page will not be able to share their thoughts. Well, the good news is, in most cases, you aren’t removing all comment capabilities, just taking it away from specific people. You do, however, have to turn comments off if you are operating on a Facebook Page or Community. It is a bit of a tradeoff, and be especially troubling to people that survive off a bit of validation. Ultimately, the people that truly want your content aren’t going to be turned away by this decision, but it might make newer people less easy to warm up.
The whole process has several steps and levels, so read carefully. It is recommended that you have your Facebook open on another device or window while you are reading this guide so you can slowly work through the directions and recreate them just right. Also, take note that this is using the browser version of Facebook NOT the app version.
Timeline comments can be removed via Facebook Settings.
How to Remove Comments From Your Timeline
Sometimes, your issues can be solved at this juncture by making it impossible for people that you don’t know to even see your content in the first place. Plus, while you do this method, you can prevent people from being able to tag you without your approval.
- Open up and log into Facebook on your preferred device.
- From the home page, go to the top right of the screen and open the dropdown arrow. Select “Settings,” and go to your Privacy settings.
- Find the setting labeled “Who can post on your timeline?” and then choose to edit it.
- There are a handful of options to choose from, each explaining what they permit, but the “Only Me” option is how you keep anyone else from being able to post directly to your timeline.
Of course, you probably wouldn’t be reading this if you were trying to specifically disable the comments on your Facebook activity. That being said, affecting the visibility of your post also affects who can comment on them, so keep that in mind as an option.
Removing Comments from Individual Posts
You are probably aware of the fact that Facebook allows you to choose who can and can’t see your posts while you are creating the post. However, you might not know that you can change this visibility after the fact. If people that you aren’t friends with start coming into your posts and causing trouble, you can retroactively change the visibility of the post and keep them from coming back. To do so:
- Tap the three vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner of the post in question.
- Select “Edit Audience”
- From here, you have several options ranging from Public to Only Me, each describing what level of visibility the post will be allowed. Choose whichever one best suits your needs.
Deleting Facebook group comments is possible if you write them or you’re the group’s admin.
Removing Comments from Facebook Groups
If you are posting to a Facebook Page or community, there is a completely straightforward option for stopping comments. But, to be able to access it, you have to either be the person that made the post originally or have admin privileges for the page. Of course, you probably shouldn’t be worried about the comment content if you aren’t managing a page or the person who made the post originally anyway.
- Locate the post where the comments issue is happening.
- Tap on the three dots in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, select “Turn Off Comments.”
Additionally, as mentioned before, sometimes the issues can be remedied by changing who can see the Page in the first place. If you are an admin for a page that is experiencing problems with hateful comments, consider changing the Page’s privacy settings.
